Many bookies offer free bets. You can make guaranteed earnings by finding a fairly evenly matched event (eg Man Utd vs Man City) then placing a bet on both eventualities (for this example we are ignoring the possibility of a draw). For example, if you place a free matched bet of £10 at 1/2 odds on Man Utd winning and a free matched bet for £10 at 1/2 odds on Man City winning:

If Man Utd win, you win (10(bet) + 10(free matched bet)) x 2 = 20 x 2 = £40, less the £20 you spent for a £20 profit
If Man City win, you win (10(bet) + 10(free matched bet)) x 2 = 20 x 2 = £40, less the £20 you spent for a £20 profit
